Under British rule, the township was included in Hakha district Ministry of Home and Religious Affairs issued and ordered to be Matupi township on March 22,1948. In the township there are five major tribes namely; Matu, Dai, Zotung, Lautu, and Mara (Miram). In 1994, the total population of Matupi township was 47072; of which Matupi tribe was 15993, Zotung tribe 14482 (15482), Mara tribe 7676, Dai 5656 and Lautu tribe 2225.
Tribes of Matu
In Matu tribes contain; Batuu, Thai Phum, Nga Leng, Leng le, Oei Thang, Kui Hon, Nga Tuu, Lengtin, Piltun, Hnamhon, Wethoo, Hlatan Tribes.
Tribes of Zotung
In Zo Tung tribes contain; Sal Thawng, Tin Paw, In Mai.
Tribes of Mara
In Mara tribes contain; Ngai Fai, Lai Lin.
Tribes of Dai
In Dai tribes contain; Nung - Thai - Buisaa, Thangyawng - Ringca, Maadu-Welu
